MX53 First Impressions

Kris Keefer- Keefer Testing https://www.keeferinctesting.com/offroad-testing/2019/9/23/dunlop-mx53-tire-review

Front:

  • ·I managed to ride five different types of tracks and I will be completely honest here; I came away with a more positive outlook on these tires than after the first day of testing, at Perris Raceway.
  • ·The Dunlop MX53 front tire impressed me on the first day of testing, but it wasn’t until after day two (at Glen Helen) that I realized that I could actually like an intermediate to hard terrain front tire better than a soft terrain front.
  • ·Flat corners (while on throttle) or medium lean angle sweepers gives me a more secure/planted feel than a MX33 or MX52 and doesn’t leave me with a feel of washing the front end out. As much as I love the MX3S front tire, even that tire isn’t as good in this area of the track.
  • ·The overall integrity/feel of the tire still remains intact with almost 10 hours on it.

Rear:

  • ·When it comes to entering shallow hard pack ruts I have yet to feel anything better than a MX53 in this area of the track.
  • ·When braking into corners there was much less slide with the MX53 than the MX33 and that really helps when you’re asking your motorcycle for traction/bite when diving hard into a corner.
  • ·The contact patch that the rear tire lays down for you is better than any other intermediate to hard pack terrain tire I have tried as well as allows for a more controlled scrub up faces of dry/hard pack jumps.
  • ·With almost 10 hours on the rear tire, its performance hasn’t dwindled a huge amount and is consistent enough for me to continue to put time on it.

Overall, these Dunlop MX53 tires have changed my outlook on running an intermediate to hard terrain tire on a wide variety of tracks. Having a tire that is consistent enough to run in the early morning motos as well as the late afternoon motos is tough to do, but Dunlop has done a good job with providing us a tire that is capable of doing this.

  • ·I had more confidence and a better feel in the front end than I've ever had; that's the truth. I even went out and rode a moto after they put down some water, because that is often a problem area with hard pack tires. The tighter lug patterns don't allow the mud to clean out and the grip disappears. That was not the case with the MX53; it worked better than it's predecessor by a long ways in all conditions. The rear was terrific as well, but this front tire is a revelation for me and I can't recommend it enough.

  • ·Straight line braking feel; was able keep pushing deeper and deeper in the braking zones. Was really impressed by how much grip the front tire kept, wouldn’t skid as easily even if I tried to mid brake and try to lock up the front tire, it wouldn’t do it, it would continue to grip the ground so well.
  • ·MX53 was much for confidence inspiring
  • ·Carcass comfort; more carcass absorption on acceleration bump and better under de-cel. Rear tire doesn’t feel so dead as it hits the bump, a little more absorption to it.

  • ·As the track did dry out and get hard packed, I could trust the tire even when they threw down some water on the lips and they were hard, I knew the tires was going to grip and not break loose. Was nice to have that performance.
  • ·Front tire was biggest surprise, because it was really good under breaking. With this tire whether the track was soft and loamy in the morning or hard packed square edgy, I can come into the corner hard onto the brakes and the tire would have a predictable slide to it. I can trust and feel like the tire was glued to the ground.
  • ·Better performance throughout the whole day

  • ·Overall, the first thing that impressed us was the front tire's performance under braking.
  • ·Also, the rear tire had a surprising amount of grip when leaned over, even in the softer, more intermediate parts of the track.
  • ·And, of course, the MX53 had an substantial amount of grip on the few hard-packed, dry, dusty sections of the track. Each time I went through this rock hard left bowl turn, I went faster and faster trying to find where the tires would give up the ghost, and they continued to hold on to the track.

  • ·It doesn’t even matter if you are a Dunlop fan or not, this is a tire you have to try, so far we like its consistent feel and performance.
  • ·Now Dunlop finally offers two solid choice of tires—the MX33 and the much-improved MX53.
  • ·Although the two do crossover to some degree, the MX53 is now a more viable option than ever before.
